Evolução da estrutura e do associativismo sindical no Rio Grande do Sul, no período de 1991 1 2005

Abstract

This paper is aimed at describing the evolution of the trade union structure and of trade union density in Brazil and Rio Grande do Sul, the southernmost state of the country, during the 1990s and the 2000s. It shows that the number of unions considerably increased both in the state and in the country. It also reveals that, in contrast to the most industrialized market economies, union density increased in the country during the period. The levels of unions density in the state of Rio Grande do Sul were in the past and still are nowadays higher than those of Brazil. Finally, the study shows that there is evidence of significant contrast between the evolution of union density in urban and rural areas. While in the former union density has slightly declined, in the latter it has considerably increased
