Migração e divisão social do espaço na Região Metropolitana de Porto Alegre

Abstract

In this paper we analyse some data of the Demographic Census of 2000, describing migratory flows to the Metropolitan Area of Porto Alegre, Brazil. Based on a Sociospacial Typology of the Region we studied the demographic and social characteristics of immigrants and “natural” population. We conclude that the immigrants, even those better educated, share the worst standards of wealth distribution. Furthermore, although they can be found in the best areas they represent a smaller proportion compared to the natural residents. Nevertheless, there is evidence that a higher proportion of immigrants are employed in standard jobs, and that they play an important role in the shaping the areas that are typical in the industrial activity. By comparing these groups we help to understand the relationships between migration and social segmentation of the territory.
