Desigualdades sociais e espaciais na metrópole: um olhar sobre a Região Metropolitana de Porto Alegre em 2000

Abstract

This paper presents a picture of the segmentation and social diversity in the Metropolitan Area of Porto Alegre. It is based on the assumption that labor has a structuring role in society. Evidence was collected in the Demographic Census of the year 2000. The authors built a social-occupational typology and it identifies a number of basic characteristics in the population. The main hypothesis is that a process of social and spatial segregation is under way and that this was deepened in the most densely populated urban areas due to the transformations provoked by the economic restructuring.
