Tendências da força de trabalho da Região Metropolitana de Porto Alegre: 1993-2013

Este artigo tem por objetivo identificar e interpretar as principais tendências da força de trabalho da Região Metropolitana de Porto Alegre no período 1993-2013, utilizando dados anuais da Pesquisa de Emprego e Desemprego. O comportamento do índice de participação da força de trabalho é analisado em nível agregado e por características sociodemográficas selecionadas — idade, sexo, cor, posição na família e escolaridade. As evidências proporcionadas pelo estudo revelam que a força de trabalho regional cresceu, em ritmo mais elevado, no período 1993-2003, iniciou um processo de desaceleração de seu crescimento no período 2003-08 e, desde 2009, manteve-se relativamente estável. Quanto às mudanças na composição da força de trabalho, destacaram-se os aumentos das parcelas relativas de adultos de 40 a 59 anos, idosos, mulheres, cônjuges e dos segmentos mais escolarizados.

Abstract
This article aims at identifying and interpreting the main trends of the labor force in the Metropolitan Area of Porto Alegre in the period between 1993 and 2013, by using annual data from the Employment and Unemployment Survey. The behavior of the labor force participation rate is analyzed both at the aggregate level and in terms of the selected socio-demographic characteristics — age, gender, color, position in the family and schooling. The evidence provided by the study reveals that the regional labor force grew at a faster pace in the period between 1993 and 2003, started to slow down between 2003 and 2008 and has remained relatively stable since 2009. As for the changes in the labor force composition, the increase in the relative shares of adults aged 40 to 59, elderly people, women, spouses and those with a higher education level was very significant.
