Sistema financeiro (e desenvolvimento) do Rio Grande do Sul

Abstract

The paper aims to analyze the role of private banks in the historic development of RS, first, in the period from 1850 to 1930, when there was a regional bank system, and later, when was created an integrated national financial system, concentrating in the financial center o f the country. More over, the paper aims to remember the reasons that have justified the creation of public financial institutions, with the role of long term financing, witch the private banks could not play.
