Resumo

In this article, we seek to analyze, in a succinct manner, the process of collective
bargaining and its results, highlighting the variables that determine the results of
collective agreements in the shoe industry in Rio Grande do Sul. By employing a
sample of the results of collective bargaining in five unions in the shoe industry
in the Vale do Sinos region in the period from 1996 to 2001, we have attempted
to understand the determining macroeconomic factors of the industry, of two
aspects of collective bargaining: the real average salary readjustment and the
readjustment of the salary base. The results suggest that the minimum salary
was the only determining factor of the readjustments of the salary base, and that
the salary readjustment depends on the currency exchange, the price of shoe
exports, and the level of industry activity.
