Ajustamento da América Latina: crítica ao modelo de Washington

Petrônio Portella Filho

Resumo

This articles presents a comprehensive analysis of the Latin American adjustment
experience during the eighties and early nineties. The adjustment programs
applied by the international financial institutions have solved some problems but
created new ones. In the vast majority of countries, economic growth is slower and
inflation is higher than in the sixties and seventies. There was a major increase in
the incidence of poverty and income distribution became worse. The statistical
evidences indicate that the adjustment agenda applied by the " Washington Consensus"
is technically inefficient and politically inadequate.
