Abstract

The recent Law 11.732/2008 regulated the constitution of Export Processing Zones (ZPEs) in Brazil. The creation of these zones has been object of polarization between the theoreticians and policy makers that debate the subject from the reading of the international cases. In the Brazilian case, the “Zona Franca de Manaus” (ZFM) is the experience more close to what it is a ZPE. The economic results of the ZFM are not clearly favorable. The possibility of the installation of several ZPEs in the Country can generate an unfair competition with the companies that are not installed inside of these areas. This will bring damages to the production and the job.
