The Rio Grande do Sul's industry performance in 1996-2007: a compared Shift-Share analysis

Abstract

ABSTRACT The aim of this paper is to find elements that might explain a participation loss of Rio Grande do Sul’s industry in national industry from 1996 to 2007 through the use of Shift-Share Analysis to identify sectoral and regional factors that influenced its performance. Data analysis showed that the Sul-Rio-Grandense industry presented satisfactory performance in the first period. However, the subsequent periods showed a change in the so-called dynamic industries, most of which the Gaucha industry is not specialized. Also, the competitive advantages that industries presented in the first period were not sustained in the subsequent ones. These results might show a possible trend in progress on the near future, especially because the Brazilian economy has gone through some structural changes in the last decade.
