Performance of the labor market in RMPA up to May 2012

Abstract

ABSTRACT The labor market in the metropolitan area of Porto Alegre showed positive performance in the period from January to May 2012, despite of the slowdown observed when comparing the results with the same period of 2011. In the context of a downturn in economic activity, throughout the country, the occupational level had a smaller rate of growth in the period January-May/2012 comparing to the same period last year, the unemployment rate showed a slightly decreased, interrupting the sharp decline registered in the previous two years, and the average real income recorded an increase similar of that observed in the two previous years (2.3% in the period January-April/2012 comparing to the same period last year). For the year 2012, the behavior of regional labor market has been considerably affected by the uncertainty, arising from the international financial crisis, which worsened in the European context.
