Income mobility and public transport: about the opportunity of subway systems implementation

Abstract

ABSTRACT This paper aims at analyzing the problems of urban mobility in a context where automobiles predominate as a modal transport choice. It points out the urgency of reorienting public policies on the subject and it emphasizes the need for improving public transport as a qualified access alternative to densely populated urban areas. It describes the different modes of public transport systems stressing their positive contributions and their constraints. It explores in some detail the metro system and stresses the benefits of investing in efficient transport modalities like the Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) ant the Light Rail Vehicle (LRV).
