Abstract

ABSTRACT The aim of this paper is to analyze the quality of economic growth in the three Coredes with the lower income per capita of Rio Grande do Sul in the first decade of the twenty first century. The paper also aims to ensure that the economic growth contributed to increase formal employment, reduce poverty and income inequality. The methodologies developed by Ravallion and Chen and Kakwani and Pernia were applied to data from the formal labor market. Furthermore, data on the socioeconomic structure and productivity of employees in each Coredes were used, in order to provide additional information that may help in understanding the dynamics of socioeconomic activities in the Coredes. The results showed that the growth was pro-poor relative to incomes in some cities, that means, economic growth in some municipalities increased the income of low-wage workers. However, most of the results pointed to a growing impoverishment, and when inequality was analyzed we noted that it also rose in the majority of the cities showing that pro-poor growth has not happened. Key words: pro-poor growth; formal labor market; inequality. Artigo recebido em 19 de maio 2011.
