Abstract

ABSTRACT The Farming Census of 2006 realized by the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE) has, for first time, singled out the family-run farms statistics in Brazil. In this paper the focus is placed on the statistics regarding family-run farms in the state of Rio Grande do Sul with the view of identifying the relevant information this official data base provides, as well as to make remarks on the use of the IBGE data in studies both of public policies for this segment and of how the latter affect social and economic development in the state.
