The aim of this paper is to analyze the behavior of Brazilian sector exports in the period 2004-2008, from the indicator of Revealed Comparative Advantage and the indicator of contribution to the trade balance as panel estimations. Was also used Pavitt's taxonomy to classify sectors according to the technological level and thus address the performance and competitiveness of Brazilian exports, making sure there was a change in the pattern of specialization in the recent period. The empirical analysis by different methods showed that Brazilian exports are a function of both the positive index of Revealed Comparative Advantage and the rate of contribution to the balance. Thus, we can interpret that Brazil can: be increasing their revealed comparative advantages in products with higher added value and, taken together, have a higher contribution to the trade balance and, to be expanding its market-share in primary sectors, which has allowed improving the contribution of these sectors on the trade balance. This suggests policies to consider foreign trade between large and small sectors, taking advantage of the attributes in terms of comparative advantages of the first and the balance of the contribution of others. Key words: exports; competitiveness; analysis panel.Downloads
