O envelhecimento do trabalhador impõe novos desafios às políticas públicas

Abstract

The aging process of the brazilian population has been intense over the last years, due to the demographic dynamics, which profoundly affected the age distribution of the labor force, raising the proportion of adults in their 40´s or more. In recent years, they came to represent the most important group in the workforce, creating new challenges to the public and social policies. Confronted with this new reality, the objective of this study is to acknowledge and analyze the changes that are actually occurring in the workforce composition in the Metropolitan Area of Porto Alegre, putting in evidence the importance of a more mature segment within the labor market. The study was based on the data collected by the Employment and Unemployment Research of the Metropolitan Area of Porto Alegre (PED-RMPA), Brazil, for the 1993–2009 period.
