Inflação e custo da cesta básica na Região Metropolitana de Porto Alegre, no período 1994-04

Abstract

This paper tries to analyze inflation behavior, measured by the Consumer Price Index (IPC) and the Basic Basket cost both calculated by the Economic Research and Study Center — IEPE/UFRGS including the Metropolitan Region of Porto Alegre, in the period from 1994-2004. The main conclusions were that the inflation found out by the IPC/IEPE was kept in decline in the period from 1994 to 1998, reaching reduced levels of inflation and then it showed raised rates in two moments: in 1999 and in 2002 due to conjunctural factors. In the period from 1995 to 2004 it reached an increased average rate of 9,9%. Yet the accumulated inflation rate, since the Real Plan (01/07/94), has shown an increase of 200,89% while the Basic Basket cost had a minor increase of 139,5%.
