- Abstract
- Modern History has shown several changes in the relation of capitalism with time and space. In this particular relation, the speed of time is increasing and the experience of space is enlarging. Following Fenand Braudefs ideas and comparing them with those of G. Arrighi, this paper will focus this special relation with the space as a consequence of the development of the market, from the local ones at the end of the Middle Age to the national fordist ones in XXth Century. With respect to time, Regulation Theory's concept of modes of development, as Arrighi's one of accumulation regimes, have made a periodization of capitalist history that shows the succession of those periods as a result of the cyclical nature of this mode of production. Contemporary times are experiencing another moment of cyclical transition, as the previous ones amidst a crisis that accelerates historical time. The direction of this change can be seen in the processes of globalization and economic integration and repeats the same pattern of enlarging economic space and accelerating time.
