- In this article, we questioned the problem related to the crisis of the New Social Movements (NSM), taking as reference the pattern assumed b> the movements at the seventies and the eighties, particularly in the Brazilian case. The crisis approach has to do with the hypothesis of a new, original situation at the social movements. The analysis os NSM have given emphasys to the social participation spaces concerning daily experiences, through which new collective identities are built up at the political culture sphere. These spaces are regarded as based in principles like autonomy, internal democracy, solidarity and non-alienation. We also point out some issues which still remain as open questions, methodologically and analitically, in the available bibliography. Some substantive items are referred as well to stress the present historical-conjunctural and analytical situation of Urban Social Movements.
