- Resumo O objetivo central deste artigo é analisar a relação entre pobreza e meio ambiente na agricultura familiar (AF) do Rio Grande do Sul, através dos indicadores do Censo Agropecuário 2006. Partindo das hipóteses teóricas e de suas controvérsias disponíveis na literatura, foi construída uma matriz de relação entre práticas agrícola e meio ambiente e, a partir desta, foram identificadas as dimensões e os indicadores a serem utilizados. Os resultados apontam a existência de correlação entre práticas ambientalmente mais sustentáveis e menor incidência de pobreza, o que abre um bom espaço para o debate sobre o atual modelo de agricultura. De qualquer forma, a distribuição espacial desses fenômenos ainda exige aprofundamento das investigações. Palavras-chave Pobreza; meio ambiente; agricultura familiar. Título em inglês: Poverty and the environment: the case of family farming in the municipalities of the State of Rio Grande do Sul Abstract The aim of this paper is to analyze the relationship between poverty and the environment in family farming in the State of Rio Grande do Sul by making use of the Censo Agropecuário 2006 (Agricultural Census 2006). We depart from the theoretical hypotheses and their controversies available in the literature and propose a matrix of relationship between agricultural practices and the environment. From the matrix we identify the dimensions and indicators to be used. The results point to the existence of a correlation between more environmentally sustainable practices and a lower incidence of poverty, which opens a large space for the debate on the current model of agriculture.
