Abstract
The aim of this paper is to identify and describe the internal and external long-term historical conditions which enabled the uprising of the government of President Hugo Chávez in Venezuela and made possible for him to confront—both at the national and international levels—the political and economic forces that used to be dominant. We will argue that, for the uprising, the roll of oil in the Venezuelan society and the collapse of the political arrangement known as Punto Fijo have been decisive. We will show that these practices seem to have been facilitated by a regional conjuncture characterized by the impoverishment of people and states around Venezuela, by the decline of the hegemony of the United States and the recent changes in the oil economy as well. Keywords: Latin American, Government of Hugo Chávez, oil economy Clasificación: JEL: O54; Q48.
