- The text focuses on the evolution of the economy of Rio Grande do Sul during the period of the First Republic (1889-1930), taking its trade relations, either to other countries or other regions, as the major point of reference. The changes In the exports commodity structure as well as its rate of growth are analysed, being verified a very expressive diversification in the regional productive structure. This stuctural diversification, together with the regional market integration that ocurred in the period, established a extremely dynamic evolution in the "gaucho" economy, based upon the intense growth in its exports and its internal market expansion.
