- This work analyses the Industrial Organization (IO) as a Scientific Research Program. Starting from the Identification of a theoretical milestone, we rebuild the path traced by this field since its origin until the shape it presents nowadays in the academic milieu, in order to examine its idea of progress. 10 is proposed to be a theoretical analysis alternative to the Neoclassical Microeconomics, and has developed through the utilization of a variety of methods of research. We started from the so called "introductory paradigm" exposed through the models presented for Mason which accompanied the causal structure-conduct-performance relationship. Then, we presented Bain's works, the Scherer's synthesis, the Contestable Markets Theory and, finally the Game Theory applied to explain the oligopoly behaviour. The Identification of the movement that goes from the Traditional or Classical until the New / O through the internal criticism is made, so permitting a debate between the various paradigms.
