- Abstract The article concentrates on the industrial restructuring prompted by recent macroeconomic changes in Brazil. Looking upon the textiles and clothing sectors of Santa Catarina, it argues that the firms reacted differently to the new conditions. Some tried do modernize their structures, incorporating new machinery and improving design activities, among other things. But many increased subcontracting practices, mainly of the capacity or concurrent type, involving smaller firms, workers. cooperatives and homeworkers. The different responses resulted in big job losses and in worse conditions to the workers. Restructuring meant that chips, the best symbol of modern technology, went hand in hand with forms of production organization which recall the sweatshops typical of the early periods of manufacturing.
