- Abstract
- The aim of this article is to evaluate the evolution of public employment in the United States of America from the end of F. D. Roosevelt’s presidency to B. Obama’s. The analysis reveals that ideological and geopolitical concerns shaped the formulation of social and macroeconomic policies in that period. Results indicate that, until the 1970s, the share of public employment in activities connected to social policy grew fast. Since the 1980’s, however, public employment in police activities and in the judiciary gained increased expression, overcoming employment in public health. Under Obama, given the severe economic crisis facing the country and the macroeconomic policies adopted by the administration, there has been an unprecedented decrease in the level of public employment in education at the local level of government. This has been contributing to an additional deterioration of the profile of public employment, particularly in social policy.
