Abstract: This study aims to analyze the role of institutions in the countries´s development strategy. From the explanation of the key concepts used by the different approaches of institutional economics, it aims to show how these are operated in order to explain the different countries trajectories of development. It is intended to show the limits of one of these approaches - the New Institutional Economics - which is anchored in the matrix of neoclassical thought, which define institutions - and hence the trajectories of development - as a product of individual action. It is proposed, therefore, the adoption of neo-institutionalist approach, where the instiuições would be assigned a constitutive role in relations with individuals.
