Abstract
ABSTRACT The paper discusses the concept of Nation as a theoretical category for the analysis of dependence and development in Latin America. First, a discussion on the notion of totality necessary to deal with the problem of capitalist development and the hierarchic relations between the spaces of the world system is done. In this sense, we argue that the movement of capital in general only can be understood its ideal place, the world market. Going further, we discuss the concept of Nation-state, which is viewed as a necessarily fluid moment of the relationship connecting the process of capital valuation and its spatial dimension. Latin American dependent capitalist development is interpreted as one of those moments when the combination of a specific configuration of the World order with a particular balance of local social forces produced a unique outcome. In this sense, we address a critique of the reified use of the notion of Nation in dependence studies, seen as a self-being with the potential of self-development. The illusion of development is perceived in its deepness and acquires a dramatic prospective.
