- Abstract
- Abstract The aim of this article is to investigate if the Bolsa Familia Program (BFP) can be considered relevant for the construction of more egalitarian social relations in brazilian society, contributing, furthermore, to stop the stigmatization and to the social recognition of the beneficiary population. The qualitative analysis was based on 40 semi-structured interviews with BFP beneficiaries, managers e social assistants. Considering that the BFP beneficiaries are faced with a class subordination as well as a status subordination, this study is based on Nancy Fraser’s Status Model witch articulates both redistribution and recognition as minimal necessary categories to constitute a status equality or citizenship. We concluded that the BFP has produced redistribution and recognition; so it is an important mechanism to achieve more citizenship, although it has important limitations since it has not been universalized to the poor population.
