Abstract
Abstract An study of public management in Pará municipalities that form the "Arc of Deforestation" and are distinguished by the production of livestock, soybeans and timber. It examines the extent to which public actions respond to the problem of deforestation related to environmental stresses from such activities. It is based empirically on data from agricultural and livestock production, deforestation rates and municipal political-institutional arrangements, referring to the 2000-2009 period. We conclude that the presence of regulatory institutions at the municipal level contributes to reducing environmental problems, although actions are carried out in an environment of intense conflict of interests, which limits the degree of efficiency and effectiveness of environmental management. Key words: environmental management service; deforestation; interest conflicts. Classificação JEL: Q; Q2; Q28 Artigo recebido em jun. 2011 e aceito para publicação em out. 2012.
