- Abstract
- This paper was elaborated with the purpose to analyze the importance of soybean culture, while driving economic activity for the development of the region Northwest of Rio Grande do Sul. Consists in the analysis of the main characteristics of the activity and relevance in determining regional development. The study starts with a recovery of the historical trajectory of the culture of soybean and its evolution as an important economic activity in the region and in the State. Analysis of market prospects for the coming years and of the possibilities of the region's participation in this market. It also analyses the articulation of the production system or the composition of the industrial chain of soybean complex with the goal of gathering elements defining the multiplier effect that the activity produces for the entire regional economy. Proposes a methodology of calculation of multiplier impact the production of soybeans and vegetable oils industry in Value Added of the State (and region) based on data of the array Input-Product of Rio Grande do Sul – MIPRS-2003. Finally, concluded the historic importance of the activity to regional development arising mainly from the high production volume and the amount of gross production and reduced capacity to boost new movements of economic expansion due to the limits to the expansion of own activity and little ability to generate multiplier effects in the rest of the regional economy.
