Determinants of residential construction growth in Brazil and Rio Grande do Sul: evidences from panel data analysis

Abstract: This paper aims to analyze the trajectory and indentify some output determinants of residential construction in Brazil and Rio Grande do Sul during the period 1990-2008. It was studied some sector indicators over the years and estimated an econometric panel data model. It was observed that the residential construction output during this period is increasing exponentially, both in national and state levels. As determinants of this behavior, based on data collected for the years 2002-2007, it was identified that sector output is positively related to real income, unskilled labor and population growth, and negatively associated with sector prices and the spread between short and long term real interest rates.
