The specialization and concentration of milk production in the microregions of Rio Grande do Sul (1990-2007)

Abstract
The article aims at evaluating the specialization and concentration evolution of milk production in the microregions of Rio Grande do Sul from 1990 to 2007. The specialization is calculated from the locational quotient and the concentration is determined from the Locational Gini, according to the geographical division of the IBGE. The results from this research demonstrate the growing specialization and concentration in milk production, with emphasis on microregion Passo Fundo, with locational quotient equal to 3.07. The Locational Gini also showed a significant growth in the period 1990/2007 (42.42%), increased from 0.33 to 0.47. Key words: Milk; locational quotient; locational Gini.
