Abstract
Abstract The purpose of this study is to show, firstly, how the concept of human development, formulated within the HDRs (Human Development Reports), is taking root in the proposals made by some scientists who engaged in the debate on social development throughout the second half of the twentieth century. Secondly, it will be discussed how Celso Furtado´s propositions in the decades of 1990 and 2000 are connected or not to the approach on human development, which guides the making of the HDRs, devised by Amartya Sen and Mahbub ul Haq. That is, the proposal of an approach focused on human development has not emerged from the mind of one scientist alone, but was rather the result of many struggles over the possibility of constructing social and political advances. In addition to this bibliography the RDH from 1990 will be examined, in the order to show the connections between the notions of social development and human development. Key word: Social development; human development; inequalities. Classificação JEL: O1; Z13 Artigo recebido em mar. 2011 e aceito para publicação em out. 2012.
