- ABSTRACT This article analyzes the growth sources and the structural change of the economy of Rio Grande do Sul state in the period of 1998-2003 that reflects reduction and retaking of its economic growth. For so much, it was used a classic input-output model of decomposition of the growth sources and structural change of Gross Production Value and employment. The impacts exercised by the components of aggregate demand on the several sectors suggest that the economic policies of the time contributed with the modernization of the economy gaucho, characterized by the technological change directed towards the intense increase of efficiency and productivity. Particularly, the expansion of export agriculture, the interstate trade increase of sectors of production goods, of durable and non-durable consumption goods and the increase of labor productivity suggest that growth was due to the increment of exports, technological change and import substitution.
