Abstract
Abstract The human capital theory shows that high poverty levels and the socioeconomic environment where the individuals are inserted affect the optimal educational choices. This paper searches evidences concerning this hypothesis in Brazil, from the verification of the marginal effects that poverty and other socioeconomic variables related to the quality of education supply brings to the educational results in its cities. In OLS regression, it is observed that poverty has a strong negative correlation with educational results, and that this outcome is still stronger for women. Key words: Poverty, education, Human Capital. Classificação JEL: I24 - Education and Inequality Artigo recebido em nov. 2010 e aceito para publicação em out. 2012.
