Abstract: ABSTRACT The article aims to analyze the migration process in the city of Novo Hamburgo (RS) in the period 2000-2007. The idea is to understand the causes and consequences of the phenomenon of internal migration, and also to verify the policies adopted by the municipal authorities with respect to internal migration. The principal sources are IBGE, FEE, RAIS, DATASUS, among others, together with an interview with the City Hall authorities. The results showed that an intense migration occurred in the industrialization phase. With the crisis arrival in the 1990s, the situation is reversed and many migrants return to their place of origin or to other regions where they could find jobs. Despite the economic impact suffered, Novo Hamburgo remains among the best cities in the metropolitan region of Porto Alegre. Key words: internal migration; public policies; Novo Hamburgo.
