Abstract
ABSTRACT This article focuses on pork production in the West of Santa Catarina, a traditional activity upon which important local interactions between family agriculture and meat processing companies are grounded historically. Based on interviews with different regional actors and on bibliographical research, the study looks at the transformation in these relationships. It is stressed that the changes have been profound, meaning almost the vanishing of the traditional “system of polyculture subordinated to pork production”, and also the reduction of the possibilities this activity meant to small farms. Families displaced from this practice had to search for new forms of reproduction, should they avoid the need to leave the region, what did happen to many people anyway. These processes show themselves as crucial for any debates concerning alternatives of development in the West of Santa Catarina at the present time. Key-words: Pork production; meat processing industry; family farming. Classificação JEL: O13, L66, O18. Artigo recebido em set. 2010 e aceito para publicação em jun. 2011.
