- Abstract
- This paper compares the views of two authors who provided decisive and conflicting contributions to the study of the Brazilian slavery: Caio Prado Jr. and Jacob Gorender. Therefore its first section presents the general outlines of the debate, emphasizing the issues which are most involved in the debate, specially as to how to define the systems of production in colonial Latin America within the Marxist theory. This controversy has been big and involves the adjustment and the limitations of Marxist categories to account for the analysis of the Latin American economic and social formations in the period, generating a debate that is both methodological and factual-historical. The second and third sections compare the ideas of both authors, enphasizing Gorender’s criticism of Caio Prado Jr.’s work. At last we try to show this is not convincing, specially in relation to the existence of a system of laws which is inherent to the colonial slavery, which leads us to the conclusion that Caio Prado Jr.’s view seems to be the most appropriate to historically revisit the Brazilian slavery and the transition towards capitalism. Key words: Latin America; Brazilian economy; colonial system. Classificação JEL: N16. Artigo recebido em jan. 2010 e aceito para publicação em dez. 2010.
