Abstract
The objective of this paper is to characterize the evolution of the production of apple and its commodity market. The paper aims to identify the Brazilian producer’s strategies responsible for the conquest of more competitive position in the national and international market. The specific subject is the evolution of apple production in the state of Santa Catarina and its comparison with the whole Brazilian production. As methodology, elements of apple productive competitive, possibilities to enhance productivity and strategies to increase the Brazilian producers market share were analyzed. The main conclusions are: a) the apple production by Brazilian producers rose as well as their share in the domestic and international markets; b) the responsible strategies for such good results are successful efforts to rise productivity, reduction in the use of nocive inputs and improvement of product quality, especially the adoption of Integrated Apple Production (PIM); c) the main problem to slow down production growth is related to precarious storage and commercial structure of small scale producers.
