Abstract
Child labor is classified as a subtraction of children and adolescents’ rights. This study aims to analyze the factors that influence a household’s decision to allocate children into a work or study environment in Brazil. The data used were from the PNAD (National Survey of Sampled Household) in the year 2006, and we estimated a multinomial logistic model, for two age groups of children: 5 to 9 years old and 10 to 17 years old. The results indicated that the most significant variables of children’s decisions to join the labor market at the ages between 5 and 9, were gender and localmora (what type of area they live in); the children between 10 and 17 of age, were more influenced by the variables gender, localmora and famcom (family situation—if the child lives with his mother). We concluded that both social and economic factors are influential in a family’s decision to allocate child’s time into labor or study. Key words: child labor; family decision; PNAD.
