Abstract: The main objective of this study is to analyze the rural tourism as a strategy for sustainable development in small and medium farms. To reach the aim we compare two alternative places which are in different stages of rural tourism development. The first is “Caminho das Pipas”, which was implemented some years ago in the municipality of Rolante. The second case is “Caminhos de Rodeio Bonito” in the municipality of Taquara, which is potential touristic route, but still not working. The study was developed through the following steps. Initially we present a review of the literature about rural development and rural tourism evolution. Willing to compare the two municipalities a survey was conduced, interviewing producers involved in each experience and also other social actors and policy makers. The results show that rural tourism can be an alternative to generate income, labor and diversification. However it demands a special qualifications, good infrastructure and investments from both, producers and public policies Keywords: Rural Development, rural tourism and sustainability
