Abstract
ABSTRACT The main objective of this study is to evaluate the hypothesis of the litoralization phenomenon in the process of per capita income convergence and demographic growth in the cities of Santa Catarina. The theoretical review is based on the argument of income convergence within an economically integrated region, and on the gravitational equation. The empirical evidence indicates that proximity to the coast impacts, in terms of high growth rates, more clearly on the demographic results than on the income results. The econometric findings, on one hand, indicate the existence of per capita income convergence, and, on the other hand, the divergence of demographic growth rates. The results provide support for the main hypothesis of this study: that is, distance to coast is estimated to be statistically significant, and with an inverse effect on demographic expansion and per capita income growth - which confirms the process of litoralization in the development of the Santa Catarina state.
