Abstract
This paper aims at analyzing the process of economic development that took place in Brazil from the 1930’s to the 1980’s. This process is viewed as a national construction, using Celso Furtado’s terms, and has occurred, in both, authoritarian and democratic regimes. By the end of the 1980’s and as a result of this process, per capita GDP rose seven times (during the same period the population tripled). The central objective is to discuss how the great number of reforms and institutional innovations implemented throughout this period – and in different social and political contexts – explains the speed up in economic growth. A historical overview of the Brazilian economy is drawn. This is made in line with the important contribution made by classic authors of Brazilian social science, in particular Celso Furtado – an exponent of the structuralism. Another objective is to evaluate the need of new reforms, as part of the debate about the need of a new development project.
