Abstract
This paper carries through a conceptual review of the contemporary terminology about industrials clusters’ origins, thus it aims to relate this theoretical approach to the reality of the chemical industry in the micro-region of Criciúma-SC. In this perspective, the paper was performed over secondary data and a research carried through the Annual Report of the Social Information of the Brazilian Labor’s Ministry. From Alfred Marshall’s seminal work the paper analyzes the industrial clusters’ concept evolution, the elements that are made from it and also it’s relevance for regional development strategies in emerging countries. In this context, a simplified typology of industrials clusters in Latin-America is briefly showed. Focusing on Santa Catarina’s Extreme South experience, by the measurement of the locacional coefficient and other relevant secondary data, like size and number of firms, among others, the paper studied the process of agglomeration of the local chemical industry. In this sense, it was highlighted the collective efficiency concept. Its conclusions showed that despite the inexistence of local joint action and a collective efficiency formed basically on positive externalities, there is a strong chemical industry that is also independent in view of the other industrial activities carried trough in Criciúma’s-SC micro-region.
