- Abstract
- During the decade of the 1990´s, in the context of the economic reforms inaugurated by the government of Collor de Mello, the Brazilian industry experienced a significant process of productive restructuring, with prominence for the movement of mergers and acquisitions (M&A) observed in the period. The relative scarcity of empirical studies applied to specific sectors does not allow a more effective analysis of the impacts associated with this phenomenon of M&A. The aim of this paper is to evaluate if and to what extent the M&A transactions have affected the evolution of the concentration in the Brazilian agrochemical industry in the period of 1990-2004. The methodological approach consists of the elaboration of a typology for the characterization of the M&A transactions and of the application of a counterfactual factorial decomposition method. The conclusion is that the M&A transactions have contributed directly and significantly to the increase of the level of concentration in the agrochemical industry in the analyzed period.
