Abstract: The objective of this study is to analyze its effects upon the evolution and convergence of the “per capita” income among the counties of the state of Rio Grande do Sul during the period from 1985 to 1998. The analysis has been done utilizing the concept of a Markov matrix. The results show a convergence among the state counties in terms of income “per capita”. This convergence is due to the performance of the demographic variables, specially the migration of the population among the regions. The effects of these variables have compensated the opposite impact of the growth of the product which, in turn, has lead to an income divergence.
