- Abstract
- The transformations on the Brazilian economy in the nineties had strong prominence on the academic and political scenario. Commercial and financial opening, both overvaluation and depreciation on the exchange rate and monetary stabilization were factors that boosted some of the debates. The nineties were marked by the reversion of the positive trade balance after more than ten years with surplus. After that 1994, the total value of exports turned out to be lower than the imports, as consequence and reinforcement of several alterations in the dynamics, in the structure and in the competitiveness of the national productive park, in addition to forceful changes in the economic policy with strong trade opening and valorization of the exchange rate. Settled in this context, this work presents the foreign trade as an instrument, which enables us to see transformations on some productive segments as to the country frailties and efficiency. Thus, this paper raises some possible elements, which demonstrate the relationship between foreign commerce and the Brazilian productive structure during the nineties.
