- Abstract
- This article studies the relation between the border expansion of Argentina that occurred at the end of the 19th century, a period of high economic growth, and the consolitated of Argentina nacion. This expansion incorporated large amounts of fertile land into several agricultural activities, and was one of the main factors in the growth of exports and the insertion of Argentina in the international scene at the this time. In the first part of this article we discuss the historical constraint of the started the Argentina State related with the formation of borderlines Argentina. In the second part, we study the main form of conquer and occupation of new fertile land which took place in the Argentinean pampa, by means of military operations, and which is referred to in the literature as the Desert Campaign. There were two of these campaigns: the one known as Alsina, in 1874, and the one by General Roca, in 1878. Both of them had the clear aim of taking over the vast territory inhabited by the Indians and settle it. Besides that, the construction of fortifications and security checkpoints led, for the first time, to the physical demarcation of a frontier. Summing up, in these two campaigns 600,000 square kilometers were incorporated into Argentinian territory.
