Abstract
The study analyses and projects the future evolution of the regional productivity of labor in the agricultural sector of the state of Rio Grande do Sul based on data of the years 1985 and 2000. The methodology of the analysis is based on a Markov matrix. There is a tendency of a future increase in labor productivity with a rise in the participation of the regions above the state average from 30.72% to 45.98%. Due to the Brazilian market opening, grapes for wine and wheat, which had to compete with the imported products, had to increase their productivity and product quality, influencing the productivity of labor. The soybeans, which already were competing in international markets, had a minor impact on labor productivity. The substitution of labor by machinery, resulting in the rural to urban migration, has a great impact on the regional labor productivity
