Abstract: This work analyzes the main changes in the foreign trade of the footwear sector in the recent period, pointing out the structural modifications implemented in the Brazilian economy since the beginning of the 90’s, as well as the cambial changes in this product’s exportations. To accomplish this task, the paper begins with a historical briefing of the Brazilian footwear exportations, from the 70’s up to the late 90’s. In the sequel, the role played by the Brazilian footwear industry in the foreign trade is analysed, with the help of related information systematized by the United Nations and standardized according to the Standard International Trade Classification (SITC). The paper ends up with the conclusion that the footwear industry competitiveness has become weaker and more unstable in the recent period.
