Abstract: This study analyses the dynamics of the growth of the Rio Grande do Sul areas from 1970 to 1996, divided in two periods, from 1970 to 1980, and from 1980 to 1996. Using the model of Arcelus. One searched to determine which the factors that had propitiated the definitive regions to present a superior growth to excessively which factors (elements) were responsible that given areas showed a higher growth than the others; which is the degree of competitiveness of these areas and the reasons of this competitiveness. Besides this, the dynamics of the growth in terms of regional inequalities were evaluated.
